(c) 'basic industrial research' shall mean original theoretical and experimental work whose objective is to achieve better understanding of the laws of science and engineering in general and which might apply to an industrial sector or to the activities of a particular undertaking;

- Industrieel basisonderzoek wordt omschreven als oorspronkelijk theoretisch of experimenteel werk dat tot doel heeft een nieuw of beter inzicht te verwerven in de wetten van wetenschap en techniek zoals die op een industriesector of de activiteiten van een bepaalde onderneming van toepassing kunnen zijn.

2. Voor de toepassing van deze richtlijn zijn de voor steun in aanmerking komende kosten uitsluitend de kosten die verband houden met fundamenteel onderzoek, industrieel basisonderzoek, toegepast onderzoek en ontwikkeling, zoals door de Commissie omschreven in bijlage I van het communautaire kader inzake staatssteun voor onderzoek en ontwikkeling (1), met uitsluiting van de kosten die samenhangen met industriële toepassing en commerciële exploitatie van de resultaten.

For the purposes of this Directive, the eligible costs shall be only those relating to fundamental research, basic industrial research and applied research and development, all as defined by the Commission in Annex I to the Community framework for State aids for research and development (1), excluding those related to industrial application and commercial exploitation of the results.

Voor zover de steun aan ondernemingen wordt verleend, is de vrijstelling van artikel 92, lid 3, onder c), van het EEG-Verdrag van toepassing, omdat de aangemelde steun voor industrieel basisonderzoek bruto 50 % bedraagt en dit percentage ingevolge het communautair kader voor staatssteun voor onderzoek en ontwikkeling aanvaardbaar is.
