Wat het vredesproces in het Midden-Oosten betreft heeft de Raad voorbereidingen getroffen voor de bijdrage van de EU aan de internationale conferentie over de wederopbouw van Gaza op 2 maart 2009 te Sjarm el-Sjeik (Egypte).
As regards the Middle East Peace Process, the Council prepared the EU’s input for the international conference on Gaza reconstruction which will be held in Sharm al-Sheikh (Egypt) on 2 March.

– onder verwijzing naar de dringende oproep van de Hoge Commissaris voor vluchtelingen van de VN (UNHCR) van 7 februari 2007 om de internationale steun te verhogen voor die landen die vluchtelingen uit Irak opnemen, de internationale conferentie over Irak van 17-18 april 2007 in Genève, bedoeld om de deelnemers te doordringen van de omvang van de humanitaire nood in Irak en de regio, de oproep van de UNHCR van 5 juni 2007 om te zorgen dat alle grenzen openblijven voor degenen die bescherming behoeven, alsook naar het advies inzake terugkeer en standpunt over de behoeften aan internationale bescherming van Irakezen buiten Irak van de UNHCR, d.d. 18 december 2006, en het UNHCR-document 'Supplementary Appeal Iraq Situation Response' (Aanvullend verzoek om fondsen voor Irak) van 8 januari 2007,
– having regard to the urgent appeals by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) of 7 February 2007 to increase international support for those countries hosting refugees fleeing Iraq, the international conference on Iraq of 17-18 April 2007 in Geneva aimed at raising awareness of the scale of humanitarian needs in Iraq and in the region, the UNHCR call of 5 June 2007 for all borders to remain open to those in need of protection, as well as to the UNHCR Return Advisory and Position on International Protection Needs of Iraqis outside Iraq of 18 December 2006 and the UNHCR 'Supplementary Appeal – Iraq Situation Response' of 8 January 2007,

5. juicht het houden van de internationale conferentie toe over de aanpak van humanitaire noden van vluchtelingen en IDP's binnen Irak en in de buurlanden, die wordt gehouden in Genève op 17 april 2007; dringt er bij de Raad, de Commissie, de autoriteiten in de regio en de internationale gemeenschap op aan hun volledige medewerking te geven aan die conferentie en voldoende financiële steun te bieden;
5. Welcomes the holding of an international conference on addressing the humanitarian needs of refugees and IDPs inside Iraq and in neighbouring countries in Geneva on 17 April 2007; urges the Council, the Commission, the authorities in the region and the international community to fully participate in that conference and provide appropriate financial support;

Daarop volgend werd in oktober 2006 samen met de Groep en het Amerikaanse ministerie van Handel een belangrijke conferentie over internationale doorgiften van persoonsgegevens georganiseerd.
This work has been followed by a far-reaching Conference on International Transfers of Personal Data organised in October 2006 jointly with the Working Party and the US Department of Commerce.

VERWIJZENDE naar de beginselen van het Handvest van de Verenigde Naties en herinnerende aan de Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens, de conclusies van de Conferentie van Wenen van 1993 over de mensenrechten, het Internationaal Verdrag inzake burgerrechten en politieke rechten, het Internationaal Verdrag inzake economische, sociale en culturele rechten, de Overeenkomst inzake de rechten van het kind, het Verdrag inzake de uitbanning van alle vormen van discriminatie van vrouwen, het Internationaal Verdrag inzake de uitbanning van alle vormen van rassendiscriminatie, de Verdragen van Genève van 1949 en andere instrumenten van het internationale humanitaire recht, het Verdrag betreffende de status van staatlozen (Genève 1954), het Verdrag betreffende de status van vluchtelingen (Genève 1951) en het Protocol betreffende de status van vluchtelingen (New York 1967).
REFERRING to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and recalling the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the conclusions of the 1993 Vienna Conference on Human Rights, the Covenants on Civil and Political Rights and on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women, the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Racial Discrimination, the 1949 Geneva Conventions and the other instruments of international humanitarian law, the 1954 Convention relating to the status of stateless persons, the 1951 Geneva Convention relating to the Status of Refugees and the 1967 New York Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees.

(24) Overwegende dat de Gemeenschap een belangrijke rol te vervullen heeft bij internationale initiatieven op het gebied van milieu en duurzame ontwikkeling; dat een aantal internationale uitdagingen moet worden aangegaan, met name de mogelijke toetreding van de geassocieerde landen van Midden- en Oost-Europa en Cyprus, de noodzaak de samenwerking met de Middellandse-Zeelanden en de landen in het Oostzeegebied op te voeren, de noodzaak het door de Conferentie van de Verenigde Naties over milieu en ontwikkeling op gang gebrachte proces voort te zetten en besprekingen over handel en milieu te voeren;
(24) Whereas the Community has an important role to play in international action on the environment and sustainable development; whereas there is a need to respond to international challenges, in particular the potential accession of the associated countries of central and eastern Europe and of Cyprus, the need to increase cooperation with the Mediterranean countries and the countries of the Baltic Sea region, the need to carry on the process initiated by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development and discussions on trade and the environment;

Hij verheugt zich over de vorderingen in het kader van de internationale conferentie over het gebied van de Grote Meren, en verzoekt alle deelnemende landen uit Midden-Afrika verder te streven naar nauwe samenwerking en dialoog in de regio.
It welcomes the progress achieved within the framework of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, and urges all the core participating countries to continue work to foster closer cooperation and dialogue within the Region.
