– (IT) I have voted in favour of the report (A6-0367/2008) by Mrs Niebler on the proposal for a Council decision on the conclusion on behalf of the European Community of the Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation between the European Community and the Government of New Zealand, which is the only non-European industrialised country with which the European Community has not yet drawn up an agreement on science and technology.

Recognises that trade too often leads to the overexploitation of eco-systems, particularly forests, in developing countries; urges industrialised countries to take responsibility for the widespread deforestation caused by international trade; emphasises the significant climate impact of deforestation and therefore the long-term economic value and importance of preserving forests intact; calls for serious EU efforts to establish reward mechanisms for 'avoided deforestation' in the international climate negotiations, along with other strong policy measures to promote responsible trade in natural resources; emphasises that policies on strengthened and sustainable forest management should be country-led and calls on the Commission to provide financial and technical assistance in this regard; stresses that assistance from the international community should take into account the opportunity costs of alternative uses of land, the costs of administering and enforcing protection and the challenges of managing the political transition as established interests are displaced; stresses that in order to avoid rural unemployment and rural-urban migration, complementary programmes to help identify new income sources are vital;

– (DE) Mr President, I believe that especially in view of the spread of entirely new diseases and epidemics in East Asia – SARS is sadly only the tip of the iceberg – it is a matter of urgency that Taiwan, a highly industrialised state which is visited by many people and has great experience in politics and administration, should be integrated into the World Health Organisation, something that this House has demanded on various occasions.
