In 1780 schreef William Marshall in „The Rural Economy of Gloucestershire” over de varkens die hij in de Gloucestervallei had aangetroffen: „Het grote, lange, witte varkensras dat misschien voordien het overheersende ras was op dit eiland, wordt hier nog steeds beschouwd als het „echte Gloucestershire-ras”.
Writing in the 1780’s, William Marshall in ‘The Rural Economy of Gloucestershire’ describes pigs he found in the Vale of Gloucester as ‘the tall, long, white breed, which was formerly, perhaps, the prevailing breed of this island, is here still considered as the “true Gloucestershire breed”.
