In the past this event has raised and donated over $50,000 to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Ottawa, the Ottawa-Carleton Regional Youth Centre, the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and the Kidney Foundation of Ottawa.

1. Notes that 2014 will be the first year for the launch and implementation of the new multiannual programmes in the fields of education, training, youth, sport, culture, media and citizenship; welcomes the fact that for the first time, the European dimension in sport is supported by an EU programme; highlights the importance of sufficient commitment and payment appropriations to ensure the full functioning of the programmes right from the beginning of the programming period;

Takes the view that the lifelong learning programme, by focusing on education and vocational training, supports the efforts to be made with regard to youth in particular to their access to autonomy; stresses that this programme should cover the activities planned at the beginning of the programming period and integrate possible new developments, allowing, inter alia, for a clear link to be established between education and the labour market, both of which are crucial for economic development and recovery; stresses the request, already approved by the Parliament, to move forward with a specific mobility programme to promote youth first jobs called ‘Erasmus First Job’;
33. considère qu'en mettant l'accent sur l'éducation et la formation professionnelle, le programme «Éducation et formation tout au long de la vie» participe aux efforts qu'il convient de déployer en faveur des jeunes, notamment pour leur permettre d'accéder à l'autonomie; souligne que ce programme devrait couvrir les activités prévues au début de la période de programmation et intégrer de nouveaux développements potentiels, permettant ainsi, notamment, d'établir un lien clair entre l'éducation et le marché du travail, deux facteurs cruciaux pour le développement et la relance de l'économie; insiste sur la demande, qui a déjà reçu son approbation, d'aller de l'avant grâce à un programme spécial de mobilité destiné à promouvoir les premiers emplois des jeunes, qui serait appelé «Erasmus premier emploi»;

Honourable senators, I strongly urge the Government of Ontario to follow the suggestion of Mr. Glen Shortliffe, their special advisor on the restructuring of the Ottawa-Carleton region, and to declare the new amalgamated City of Ottawa, the capital city of Canada, to be officially bilingual.

Recently, in my capacity as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Sports Hall of Fame, I had the happy duty of announcing that an agreement in principle had been reached with the federal government and the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton to make the Government Conference Centre here in Ottawa the new home of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, happily, with contiguous space for the Special Olympics honouring their very special athletes.
