Most provinces require graduates of foreign medical schools to take at least four years of post-graduate medical training at a Canadian university, but in 2003 only 16 per cent of foreign-born candidates were able to receive any training, according to the Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials, and of the 1,200-plus internships available to medical students, only 83 were awarded to immigrants in 2003.
