The European Commission today presented to EU agriculture ministers the conclusions of a study on the cumulative effects of 12 future trade agreements on the agri-food sector, including specific results for producer prices and production volumes for a range of products accounting for 30% of the value of the EU exports in the sector.

21. is of the opinion that the impact of biotechnology on the economics of production of and trade in agricultural products must be assessed in a broad manner, including the possible effects on non-biotech agri-food production, the possible impact of biotechnology on the economics of current and future non-food production such as biomass and biofuels, bio-degradable packaging, medicinal products, etc.; supports an ambitious European research policy in the area of biofuels and, more generally, biomass use, which is of key importance in the present energy context, allowing the EU to boost its exports and limit its imports in order to improve the EU's trade balance;

The aim of Directive 79/112/EEC of 18 December 1978 was the approximation of the legislation of the Member States on the labelling of food products at a time when there was concern about the additives used by the agri-food industries, in order to ensure that producers were not required to present their products differently, depending on the country where they were being placed on the market.
