I am speaking of the gala honouring the recipients of this year's Governor General's Performing Arts Awards, honouring Mario Bernardi, the founder and first conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in 1969; " Old Rawhide" himself, incarnated this time as Max Ferguson; the exquisite Evelyn Hart of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet; Christopher Plummer, who illuminates the theatres of Canada; Anne Claire Poirier, a pioneer in film-making; Thea Borlase, who has taught us that volunteer time is more important than money; and Édouard Lock of La La La Human Steps.
