On 11 January 2 Turkish port authority patrol boats illegally entered Greek territorial waters near the islets of Imia, remained there for many hours and obstructed Greek fishermen in the area.
Le 11 janvier dernier, deux patrouilleurs des garde-côtes turcs ont pénétré illégalement dans les eaux territoriales grecques près des îlots d’Imia, y restant plusieurs heures et entravant l’activité de pêcheurs grecs dans cette zone.

The French delegation, supported by the Greek, Portuguese, Spanish, Belgian and Italian delegations, drew the attention of the Council and the Commission to the recent significant increase in oil prices and the consequences for the economic situation of fishermen.

Fishermen have to respect conservation rules and co-operate with scientists to help build fisheries data which are sorely missing in the Mediterranean. As the Commission suggested in its Green Paper on the review of the CFP, the Union should help and encourage fishermen's organisations from all the Mediterranean states to create or to strengthen organisations aiming to promote co-operation among the interested parties".
Il faut que les pêcheurs respectent les règles de conservation et coopèrent avec les scientifiques afin de constituer des stocks de données en matière de pêche qui font cruellement défaut en ce qui concerne la Méditerranée. Comme l'a suggéré la Commission dans son livre vert sur la révision de la PCP, l'Union devrait aider et encourager les organisations de pêcheurs de tous les pays méditerranéens à créer ou à renforcer des organisations propres à promouvoir la coopération entre les parties intéressées".

According to current Community legislation, Greek fishermen have exclusive fishing rights within a zone of 6 nautical miles, as opposed to the 12 nautical miles which apply to the other Member States of the EU, especially the Mediterranean countries.
