I believe that once Iraq is a client state, the Americans will want to keep up the pressure on at least two regimes: Iran, on the one hand, to intensify President Khatami's reform movement and weaken the conservative movement that may be holding Iran back in terms of maturing and changing from revolutionary logic to state logic; and Syria, on the other, which will be asked to be a bit more accepting of American strategies, although Syria is one of the countries that has cooperated the most with the Americans since September 11 in terms of security.
Je crois qu'une fois que l'Irak sera un État client, les Américains voudront continuer d'exercer de la pression sur au moins deux régimes: l'Iran, d'un côté, pour accentuer le mouvement de réforme du président Khatami et affaiblir le mouvement conservateur qui est peut-être un obstacle à la maturité de l'Iran et à son changement de la logique de la révolution à la logique étatique; la Syrie, de l'autre côté, à qui on demanderait d'être un peu plus docile aux stratégies américaines, même si la Syrie est l'un des pays qui ont le plus collaboré avec les Américains après le 11 septembre au niveau de la sécurité.
