To mark this important occasion, I want to bring to your attention the acts of a woman whose works have struck a chord the world over — Rwandan activist Godeliève Mukasarasi, this year's recipient of the John Humphrey Freedom Award presented by Rights and Democracy.

In honour of this, the international centre for human rights and democratic development is today awarding the 1999 John Humphrey freedom award to two Burmese activists.
