Calls on the Israel authorities to bring all detainees to trial and to put an end to the use of 'administrative detention', which is an abuse of procedure which allows for prolonged and often unlawful captivity, to implement adequate measures for minors in jail, in accordance with international standards of juvenile justice and with the UNCRC, and to allow a less restrictive regime for visits to prisoners;

(Motions deemed adopted, bill read the first time and printed) Mr. Speaker, I seek the unanimous consent of the House to adopt the following motion: That the House acknowledge the 60th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel and highlight that this is an opportunity to celebrate Israel's entry into the community of nations, its many cultural, economic and scientific achievements as a free, democratic society, and the special relationship between the governments of Canada and Israel; and that the House agree to reaffirm Canadians' unwavering support for Israel's right to live peacefully and safely within secure, recognized borders, for the peace efforts undertaken by the Government of Israel and the Palestinian Authority, and for the creation of a future democratic Palestinian state living peacefully and safely next to its Israeli neighbour within secure, recognized borders.

The Commission is working closely with both Palestinian and Israel authorities to ensure unimpeded access to medical aid, through developing the Palestinian health system to better cater for women and children and calling for an easing of Israeli movement restrictions.

As representative of the Pensioners’ Party and on my own behalf, I wondered why it is that, if Yasser Arafat does not have the authority to stop the terrorists, he does not resign as President of the Palestinian Authority. Lastly, why do we not speed up Israel’s application to join the European Union? I therefore voted against the resolution.
