- (IT) Monsieur le Président, Mesdames et Messieurs, si la position quasi hystérique du président du groupe socialiste au Parlement européen à l’encontre du gouvernement polonais démocratiquement élu menace de ternir quelque peu cet heureux événement, en ce jour où la bonne volonté de tous nous a permis de parvenir à un accord, je tiens à remercier par dessus tout la chancelière Merkel, que nous remercions du fond du cœur pour ses efforts.

I would like to quote Chancellor Merkel's comments. She said:

I would also like to thank Chancellor Schüssel and his Finance Minister, for their untiring efforts to reach an agreement.
Je souhaite également remercier le chancelier Schüssel et son ministre des finances pour les efforts sans relâche qu’ils ont consentis pour parvenir à cet accord.

I would also like to thank Chancellor Schüssel, the President of the Council, who – as we know – still has a pile of work to do, but, having been so constructive in negotiations, he can count on our support in bringing round those recalcitrants on the Council whom he has not yet won over.

I would like to thank the presidencies involved, in particular the German presidency and Federal Chancellor Schröder, for the achievement by dogged negotiation of an agreement between the Member States.
