When account is taken of two aspects of the public interest here today – firstly, that there ought not to be unreasonable protection of MEPs or anybody else from public prosecution where circumstances warrant it and, secondly and importantly, that electoral debate and discussion should be able to go forward without unreasonable impediment or harassment of leading figures in it – the balance of the public interest in this case seems to be absolutely clear: the public prosecutors are doing their duty and we should do ours.
Lorsque l’on fait entrer en ligne de compte deux aspects de l’intérêt public - à savoir, premièrement, qu’il ne faut pas protéger abusivement les députés européens ou quiconque de poursuites judiciaires lorsque les circonstances le justifient et, deuxièmement, ce qui est important, qu’il faut que le débat électoral et les discussions puissent se dérouler sans obstacle ou harcèlement abusif des personnalités dirigeantes -, l’équilibre de l’intérêt public, dans cette affaire, semble absolument clair: le ministère public fait son devoir et nous devons faire le nôtre.
