I was reminded of the high quality of Senate committee work recently when I looked at the committee hearings of the House and the Senate on the appointment of the Parliamentary Budget Officer, which had been delayed because the Library of Parliament and Privy Council Office had different views on classification and level of pay for the position.
Dernièrement, j'ai pu de nouveau constater la grande qualité des travaux des comités sénatoriaux en examinant les séances des comités de la Chambre et du Sénat portant sur la nomination d'un directeur parlementaire du budget, qui avait été reportée parce que la Bibliothèque du Parlement et le Bureau du Conseil privé n'arrivaient pas à s'entendre sur la classification du poste et l'échelle de traitement.

Regrets that, for the second time, structural defects have been discovered in Parliament's buildings, this time in the wooden ceiling beams of Parliament's Brussels Chamber; calls on DG INLO to make a full review of the structural situation of all of Parliament's buildings starting with those ones which still are guaranteed by the project developer against hidden faults, if possible with the support of a few selected experts from the national building offices of different Members States, making full use of in-house accumulated knowledge; calls on the Secretary-General to present a plan to the Bureau soon with all the technical details for these works plus the costs involved;

Recognises the savings achieved due to the advance payments made over the last ten years on buildings; underlines that the European Parliament is now the owner of most of its buildings in the three places of work and will start to focus its investment on external offices; intends to re-examine the principle of co-sharing the external offices with the Commission on the basis of the report requested for March 2007 in paragraph 47 of its aforementioned resolution of 26 October 2006; calls, to that end, for the establishment of a common report, from the Commission and the European Parliament, on the modalities of co-sharing offices in terms of staff, logistics, running costs and the different time schedules of co-financing the purchase of joint offices; notes that this has been made possible, until now, due to the availability of appropriations in Parliament's budget;

It is one matter to place before this house a piece of legislation designed to get the post office working again, but it is a very different matter and it is a sad day when, in order to get the post office working again, the government of this country introduces legislation that penalizes the individual workers - workers who will be carrying those Christmas cards in subzero temperatures across this country.
