H. whereas on 20 November, in an interview published by the Sunday Times and on 7 December 2011 in an interview with the US network ABC, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad denied that his government had a policy to treat the population harshly and that he felt no guilt about his crackdown on a 10-month uprising, despite reports of brutality by security forces;
H. considérant que, dans un entretien publié le 20 novembre 2011 par le Sunday Times et dans un autre, diffusé le 7 décembre 2011 sur la chaîne américaine ABC, le président syrien Bachar el-Assad a démenti que son gouvernement malmenait systématiquement la population et déclaré qu'il ne se sentait nullement coupable de la répression faisant suite à un soulèvement qui durait depuis dix mois, malgré les informations faisant état de brutalités commises par les forces de sécurité;

7. Deplores that Syrian authorities have failed to respond to the calls to immediately stop the violence, to fulfil their commitments and to engage in meaningful reforms; calls for the resignation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and considers that this act would pave the way and facilitate the transition process which should be based on a credible and inclusive dialogue involving all democratic forces and civil society actors with the view of launching deep democratic reforms, including the lifting of the Emergency Law, the end of the monopoly of the Bath party over the Syrian society and the organisation of free and fair elections;
7. déplore que les autorités syriennes n'aient pas répondu aux appels les invitant à cesser immédiatement la violence, à respecter leurs engagements et à entreprendre de véritables réformes; demande la démission du Président syrien Bashar el-Assad et estime qu'un tel acte ouvrirait la voie et faciliterait le processus de transition qui doit être basé sur un dialogue crédible et ouvert à toutes les forces démocratiques et aux acteurs de la société civile en vue d'engager des réformes démocratiques majeures, notamment la levée de l'état d'urgence, la fin du monopole du parti Baas sur la société syrienne et l'organisation d'élections libres et régulières;

30. Recalls the importance attached to UN Security Council Resolution 1559 reaffirming the commitment of the international community to the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Lebanon, and to this end welcomes the declaration and commitment of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad concerning a timetable for the withdrawal of Syrian troops and intelligence officers from Lebanon by 30 April 2005;
