Dr. Schull: I am not a microbiologist and I cannot say that I studied epidemiology and outbreaks, but based on my clinical observations and the data I have seen, I think that, for one thing, the patient population in hospitals has changed; the population is not just aging, patients are much sicker today than they were when I started my career.
