For the EU, the establishment of a pan-American free trade area without a trade liberalisation agreement with its main partners in Latin America could seriously weaken Europe's position in the economies of the "southern cone" vis-à-vis its US competitors, accelerating the tendencies observed in trade relations in recent years.

During last month's visit to South America the Prime Minister launched the process of consultations that will take us farther in that direction by proposing the initiation of discussions with the Mercosur countries, the countries of the southern cone of Latin America, with a view to integrating Mercosur and NAFTA.
