Because the government — which is the sole owner of our largest broadcaster, namely the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, could not possibly claim it had the freedom to dictate what should be broadcast on the CBC. Tradition and the courts, including most members of the legal community, have always viewed freedom of expression and the public's right to know as being antithetical to the government's right to control the public airwaves.
