The Conference notes that the Protocol on Italy annexed in 1957 to the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community, as amended upon adoption of the Treaty on European Union, stated that:

They did not need to make enquiries or organise opinion polls. They spent two years negotiating in one place, Val Duchesse, just a couple of kilometres from here. They then took the results to Rome, where they signed a treaty that led to the creation of the European Economic Community. That was when they put Europe on the right track for good. That was 52 years ago.
Ze onderhandelden namelijk gedurende twee jaar op een plaats, in Hertoginnendal - nog geen twee kilometer van hier - en met het resultaat dat daaruit kwam, trokken ze naar Rome, ze ondertekenden een verdrag en dat leidde tot de oprichting van de Europese Economische Gemeenschap en op die manier hebben ze in feite het Europa, dat wij zo lief hebben, definitief op de rails gezet. Dat gebeurde 52 jaar geleden.
