Emphasises that, if the EU is to enjoy decision-making and operational autonomy, it must have adequate satellite resources in the fields of space imagery, intelligence-gathering, communications and space surveillance; considers that these areas could be further shared and pooled in comparison with existing agreements, either on a bilateral basis or in conjunction with the EU Satellite Centre in respect of the Helios, Cosmo-SkyMed and SAR-Lupe programmes; hopes that the MUSIS programme, which is due to replace the present generation of observation satellites, will prove to be a model of cooperation both between European countries and with the EEAS and the Union’s political-military bodies;

(14) The Community should also push, in bilateral talks with major timber-consuming countries such as the US, China, Russia, and Japan, for discussions in relation to the problem of illegal logging, for convergence towards harmonised appropriate obligations on operators on their own timber market, and for the creation of an independent, global alert system and register of illegal logging consisting for example of Interpol and an appropriate UN body, benefiting from the latest satellite detection technologies.
(14) In het kader van bilaterale besprekingen moet de Gemeenschap voorts belangrijke houtverbruikende landen zoals de VS, China, Rusland en Japan ertoe aansporen om het probleem van de illegale houtkap te bespreken, geharmoniseerde en adequate verplichtingen voor de marktdeelnemers op hun eigen houtmarkt vast te stellen en een onafhankelijk wereldwijd alarmsysteem en register voor illegale houtkap in te stellen, dat bijvoorbeeld uit Interpol en een bevoegde instantie van de VN bestaat en dat over de recentste satellietopsporingstechnologie beschikt.

(6a) The Community should also push, in bilateral talks with major timber-consuming countries such as the US, China, Russia, and Japan, for discussions in relation to the problem of illegal logging, for convergence towards harmonised appropriate obligations on operators on their own timber market, and for the creation of an independent, global alert system and register of illegal logging consisting for example of Interpol and an appropriate United Nations (UN) body, benefiting from the latest satellite detection technologies.

FRONTEX is encouraged to enter into technical cooperation with relevant European and Community agencies and bodies, including EUROPOL, the European Satellite Centre (EUSC), the European Defence Agency (EDA), The European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the European Centre for Diseases Control (ECDC), taking due account of the rules applicable to them.
