1. Urges the Commission to ensure coherence among all the Union policies affecting the Pacific region, as required by Article 208 TFEU, and specifically those on fisheries, trade and development, and to enhance potential synergies with a view to achieving a multiplier effect that maximises the benefits both for the states of the Pacific region and for the EU Member States, while also promoting the international dimension, boosting the EU’s strategic presence, raising the profile of the EU in the Western and Central Pacific, and contributing to the sustainable exploitation of Pacific resources;

EU development cooperation with Pacific ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States) countries and OCTs (overseas countries and territories) managed by the Commission is estimated at €750 million for 2008-2013.

This might be the case for the majority of the Pacific Island countries. But for a significant number there is a hidden truth in the fact that many of the Pacific Islands are not countries at all: they are 21st century colonies, and two of the colonising nations happen to be members of the EU, namely France and Britain.

Therefore, regional cooperation shall be further intensified by encouraging the existing regional organisations, in particular the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), to implement the Pacific Plan, and key CROPs (Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific), such as the Secretariat of the Pacific Community, and also by building on synergies and cooperation with the OCTs in the region.
11. Derhalve zal de regionale samenwerking nog worden opgevoerd door de bestaande regionale organisaties, met name het Forum van de eilanden in de Stille Oceaan (PIF), aan te moedigen het plan voor de Stille Oceaan uit te voeren, door steun te verlenen aan belangrijke organen van de CROP (Raad van regionale organisaties in de Stille Oceaan), zoals het secretariaat van de Pacific Community, en door voort te bouwen op synergieën en samenwerking met de LGO in de regio.
