Dat de door de EU ingediende ontwerpresolutie over de mensenrechtensituatie in Iran in de Mensenrechtencommissie van de VN dit voorjaar werd weggestemd, heeft inderdaad tot gevolg gehad dat het VN-mandaat van de speciale vertegenwoordiger in Iran werd beëindigd, maar men mag niet vergeten dat de Iraanse regering de speciale vertegenwoordiger van de VN hoe dan ook nooit had uitgenodigd om het land te bezoeken (wat één van de punten was waarover de EU in haar ontwerpresolutie haar verontrusting wilde laten blijken).
The fact that the EU lost the vote on its draft resolution on the human rights situation in Iran at the UN Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in spring this year did have the effect that the mandate of the UN Special Representative for that country came to an end. However, it should be noted that the Iranian Government had in any event never extended an invitation to the UN Special Representative to visit (this was one of the matters on which the EU had intended to express concern through its draft resolution).
