Naar schatting wordt elk jaar 13 miljoen hectare tropische bossen gerooid[1] en is 20 % van de tropische koraalriffen op aarde al verdwenen, terwijl 95 % tegen 2050 vernietiging of extreme beschadiging riskeert als de klimaatverandering onverminderd doorgaat[2].
An estimated 13 million hectares of tropical forests are cleared each year [1] and 20% of the world’s tropical coral reefs have already disappeared, while 95% will be at risk of destruction or extreme damage by 2050 if climate change continues unabated [2].

[9] In deze tekst wordt met begrotingslijn inzake tropische bossen gedoeld op de middelen die ter beschikking staan in het kader van begrotingspost B7-6200 (thans 21 02 05), krachtens Verordening (EG) nr. 2494/2000 van het Europees Parlement en de Raad van 7 november 2000 betreffende maatregelen ter bevordering van het behoud en het duurzaam beheer van tropische bossen en andere bossen in ontwikkelingslanden.
