De symptomen vertonen een karakteristiek gemengd- en wisselend beeld en omvatten een beginstadium van 'verdoving' met enige bewustzijnsvernauwing en verenging van aandacht, onvermogen prikkels te begrijpen en desoriëntatie. Deze toestand kan gevolgd worden door hetzij verdere terugtrekking uit de situatie (tot dissociatieve stupor toe - F44.2) of door agitatie en hyperactiviteit (vluchtreactie of fugue).
