Takes the view that aid for the distillation of wine by-products should be continued in order to maintain the quality of European wines and obviate any damage to the environment caused by the withdrawal of such products; believes, furthermore, that continued support should be provided for potable alcohol distillation, given that this is the only form of distillation for which there is a genuine market outlet;

7. dringt er bij de Commissie op aan dat zij de overeenkomst tijdens de aanstaande tweede onderhandelingsronde in die zin herziet, in overeenstemming met de territoriale en kwaliteitgerichte aanpak die bij de hervorming van de wijnsector moet worden gevolgd en die duurzame praktijken moet versterken, de overtollige productie moet beperken en een eind moet maken aan verplichte distillatie;

Urges the Commission to revise the agreement accordingly during the upcoming second round of negotiations, in line with the territorial and quality approach to be taken in the reform of the wine sector, which should strengthen sustainable practices, reduce surplus production and put an end to obligatory distillation;

The information that the Member States send the Commission about alcohol from compulsory distillation should therefore be extended to cover alcohol from voluntary distillation held by the intervention agencies.
