At its plenary session held yesterday the Economic and Social Committee of the European Communities (ESC) held a very lively debate on tobacco consumption in the EU. Representatives of consumers clashed with representatives of tobacco producers over the opinion presented by Mr Christoph Fuchs (Various Interests Group, Germany) on the Commission's communication on the role of the EU in combating tobacco consumption.
