Mr. Speaker, I am pleased to present a petition on behalf of Development and Peace, which is calling for the creation of a legislated ombudsman mechanism for the Canadian extractive sector, which would have the authority to receive and investigate complaints, make public its findings, recommend remedial actions and recommend government-imposed sanctions such as withholding financial and political support to any company that does not comply with standards.
Monsieur le Président, j'ai le plaisir de déposer une pétition au nom de l'organisme Développement et paix. Celui-ci demande la création d'un mécanisme légal d'ombudsman du secteur extractif au Canada qui aurait le pouvoir de recevoir et d'analyser des plaintes, de rendre publiques ses conclusions, de recommander des mesures correctives et de recommander l'imposition de sanctions par le gouvernement, tel que le report de soutien politique ou financier à toute compagnie qui ne respecte pas ces normes.

The Ombudsman has called on OLAF to respond to his draft recommendation by 31 May 2004.

Most importantly, the Resolution calls on all European institutions and not just the European Commission to respect the Ombudsman's recommendations.
