Romania decided in 2001 to place a moratorium on international adoptions after the European Parliament rapporteur for Romania, Baroness Emma Nicholson, condemned child trafficking activities and criticised the Romanian state for neglecting its children.

Afghanistan’s first parliamentary elections in over 30 years will mark the formal end of the political transition as laid out in the “Bonn Agreement” of December 2001. To support the election process, the EU deployed last July an Election Observation Mission, headed by the European Member of Parliament Emma Bonino .Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner will travel with Ms Bonino to Kunduz in North-Eastern Afghanistan to look at election preparations in the provinces.

From a general point of view, I would like to say that our mission of Members of the European Parliament fully agreed with the conclusions resulting from the extraordinary work carried out by Emma Bonino, and also, from a political point of view, we expressed our view of the priorities that the European Union should set for the future.

I should mention here that the Parliament's rapporteur for Romania, Baroness Emma Nicholson, has to her great credit been personally responsible for uncovering a breathtakingly corrupt system and that without her persistence the progress that has now been observed would not have been achieved.
