The European Union upheld this concept when, in the face of United States obstruction, it took the initiative and authorised the importation and use of generic and low-cost medicines for underprivileged communities. As a rapporteur to Parliament on directives relating to medicines, I have worked on directives concerning the authorisation of the marketing of medicines within the European Union.
C'est dans cet esprit que l'Union a repris l'initiative face au blocage américain pour permettre l'importation et l'utilisation de médicaments génériques ou de médicaments à bas prix à destination des populations défavorisées. Étant moi-même rapporteur au Parlement sur les directives concernant les médicaments - directives liées, entre autres, aux autorisations de mise sur le marché des médicaments au sein de l'espace communautaire - je sais qu'il est important de trouver un équilibre pertinent entre recherche et générique, entre protection des données et prix du médicament, entre innovation et copie autorisée.
