Stresses the need finally to address the ‘book famine’ experienced by visually impaired and print-disabled people; reminds the Commission and Member States of their obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities to take all appropriate measures to ensure that people with disabilities enjoy access to cultural materials in accessible formats, and to ensure that laws protecting intellectual property rights do not constitute an unreasonable or discriminatory barrier to access by people with disabilities to cultural materials; calls on the Commission to work actively and positively within the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) to agree on a binding legal norm based on the treaty proposal drafted by the World Blind Union and tabled at WIPO in 2009;

In conclusion, I would like to ask the rapporteur to accept the amendment I tabled together with Mr Corrie, on behalf of the PPE-DE, requesting recognition for the State’s obligation to guarantee the right to education and the role that the private sector can play in making the universal right to education, which sadly is currently the most violated right, a reality.
Pour terminer, je voudrais demander au rapporteur d’accepter l’amendement que j’ai présenté conjointement avec M. John Corrie, au nom du groupe PPE-DE et qui réclame la reconnaissance de l’obligation qu’a l’État de garantir le droit à l’éducation et le rôle que le secteur privé peut jouer pour faire une réalité du droit universel à l’éducation qui, malheureusement, est aujourd’hui le droit le plus enfreint.
