IN-CONTEXT TRANSLATIONS
– (NL) Mr President, one of the main advantages of speaking late is that you can leave out a considerable number of things that have been said before.

That means we will have equal status with all the other committees in this Parliament, and yet it is the Foreign Affairs Committee that always gets the afternoon sessions, and we are always made to speak late in the evening while our Foreign Affairs colleagues can go for an early dinner and an early bed.

In the strongest words, we wish to relay this message and stand with the people of Ukraine (1900) [Translation] Mr. Bernard Bigras (Rosemont—La Petite-Patrie, BQ): Madam Speaker, I am delighted today to have this opportunity to speak, late in the Parliamentary day, on the current situation in Ukraine.

The fundamental question, in my view, remains the one that the late André Laurendeau and the late Davidson Dunton would ask at the beginning of the public hearings of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism four decades ago: Can English- speaking and French-speaking Canadians live together, and do they want to do so?

The next commissioner will have to respond to those changes, just as the previous commissioners have done, but the fundamental question, in my view, remains the one that the late André Laurendeau and the late Davidson Dunton would ask at the beginning of the public hearings of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism four decades ago: Can English-speaking and French-speaking Canadians live together, and do they want to do so?

– (NL) Mr President, like the chairman of our Committee on Fisheries, I too have the privilege of speaking late this evening and I have the special privilege of acting on behalf of my coordinator, Mr Varela Suanzes-Carpegna.

Varela Suanzes-Carpegna.

– Mr President, the advantage or disadvantage of speaking late is that much of what I was going to say has already been said, so I will just reinforce three general points.

I would also like to speak to the patience of the rest of the members of this Chamber who are waiting to speak at this late hour and congratulate them on the fact that they are in this Chamber and prepared to speak on this important issue.

I have no problem hearing my friend from the other side in the Reform Party, but then other members may wish to speak and that will upset the apple cart, so to speak, at this late stage.
