The annual Council Regulations fixing the fishing opportunities and associated conditions for certain fish stocks and groups of fish stocks applicable in the North Sea set the TAC levels for the stocks concerned (most recent and currently binding is Council Regulation (EU) 2016/72 of 22 January 2016 fixing for 2016 the fishing opportunities for certain fish stocks and groups of fish stocks, applicable in Union waters and, for Union fishing vessels, in certain non-Union waters, and amending Regulation (EU) 2015/104).

Currently there are three detailed technical measures regulations enacted under the ordinary legislative procedure covering the main sea basins in Union waters – Council Regulation (EC) No 850/98 of 30 March 1998 for the conservation of fishery resources through technical measures for the protection of juveniles of marine organisms covering the North-east Atlantic (and the Black Sea since 2012); Council Regulation (EC) No 1967/2006 of 21 December 2006 concerning management measures for the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources in the Mediterranean Sea, amending Regulation (EEC) No 2847/93 and repealing Regulation (EC) No 1626/94; and Council Regulation (EC) No 2187/2005 of 21 December 2005 for the conservation of fishery resources through technical measures in the Baltic Sea, the Belts and the Sound, amending Regulation (EC) No 1434/98 and repealing Regulation (EC) No 88/98.

In afwachting van de resultaten van een onderzoek naar de toestand van de visbestanden in Guinese wateren, zijn de visserijbetrekkingen tussen Guinee en de Gemeenschap begrijpelijkerwijs met slechts één jaar verlengd. Uiteraard brengt het protocol tussen Guinee en de Europese Unie beide partners voordeel. Het protocol blijft bijdragen tot de ontwikkeling van de plaatselijke visserij, waardoor de voedselvoorziening in hogere mate gewaarborgd wordt. Het waarborgt eveneens dat een groot deel van de Europese vloot in deze wateren zijn werkzaamheden althans tot eind dit jaar kan blijven voortzetten. Dit protocol draagt via de beheerste en rationele exploitatie die uitsluitend dit soort overeenkomst kan bieden, eveneens bij tot het behoud van de visbestanden van het land.
Awaiting the results of a survey on the state of fish stocks in Guinean waters, the fisheries relations between the Republic of Guinea and the Community were understandably extended with only one year. It is obvious that the protocol between Guinea and the European Union is profitable for both sides. It will continue to contribute to the development of local fisheries and will thus increase the country’s food security. It will also ensure continuity of activity, at least till the end of this year, for much of the European fleet in these waters. This protocol will also contribute to the conservation of the country’s fishery resources through the controlled and rational exploitation which only this type of agreement can offer.
