Sinds hun ontstaan hebben de landen en gebieden overzee (LGO) banden met de EU. De LGO bestaan uit 25 eilanden verspreid over de Atlantische Oceaan, de Zuidelijke Oceaan, de Noordelijke IJszee, de Indische Oceaan en de Stille Oceaan en het Caribische gebied.
Since its origin, the overseas countries and territories (OCTs) have had an association with the EU. The OCTs comprise 25 islands which are spread around the Atlantic, Antarctic, Arctic, Indian and Pacific Oceans and the Caribbean.

Points out the need for EU policies to be consistent with development objectives along the lines called for in Article 208 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union; calls on the Commission to ensure that measures relating to Pacific fisheries are in keeping with an external dimension of the common fisheries policy and with the joint communication from the Commission and the High Representative entitled ‘Towards a renewed EU-Pacific development Partnership’, and that they guarantee responsible and sustainable exploitation of fishery resources while at the same time contributing to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and responding to environmental challenges in the Pacific region; strongly supports the proposal put forward by the Commission and the High Representative aimed at making the Pacific OCTs catalysts for inclusive and sustainable growth for human development in the region, including in the fisheries sector;

Member States having actively exercised pelagic fisheries activities in the SPRFMO Convention Area in 2007, 2008 or 2009 shall limit the total level of gross tonnage of vessels flying their flag and fishing for pelagic stocks in 2012 to the levels of total 78 610 gross tonnage in that area in such manner that sustainable exploitation of the pelagic fishery resources in the South Pacific is ensured.

Recognises that the Pacific region is endowed with an abundance of natural resources, especially fisheries, minerals and forests and that in many countries of the region, agriculture and tourism are the mainstays of the economy; stresses, therefore, that ecologically and economically sustainable development must be at the heart of any strategy relating to these key sectors; stresses that the exploitation of natural resources must contribute to income generation for the entire population of the Pacific Island countries and support poverty alleviation in particular;

This Agreement constitutes a framework for strengthening international cooperation for the purpose of conserving and making rational use of Indian Ocean tuna and related species through the establishment of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission, hereinafter called the "IOTC" and the adoption by the latter of resolutions on conservation and management in the area of competence of the IOTC which become binding on the contracting parties.

(5) Bij deze verordening moeten technische maatregelen worden vastgesteld voor het noordoostelijke deel van de Atlantische Oceaan, het centraal-oostelijke deel van de Atlantische Oceaan en de wateren voor de kust van de Franse departementen Frans-Guyana, Martinique, Guadeloupe en Réunion die uitsluitend onder de soevereiniteit of jurisdictie van Frankrijk vallen, aangezien technische maatregelen voor de Oostzee en de Middellandse Zee zijn vastgesteld bij Verordening (EG) nr. 2187/2005 van 21 december 2005 betreffende de instandhouding door middel van technische maatregelen van de visbestanden in de Oostzee, de Belten en de Sont, tot wijziging van Verordening (EG) nr. 1434/98 en tot intrekking van Verordening (EG) nr. 88/98[20], respectievelijk Verordening (EG) nr. 1967/2006 van de Raad van 21 december 2006 inzake beheersmaatregelen voor de duurzame exploitatie van visbestanden in de Middellandse Zee, tot wijziging van Verordening (EEG) nr. 2847/93 en tot intrekking van Verordening (EG) nr. 1626/94[21].
(5) This Regulation should establish technical measures for the North East Atlantic, the Eastern Central Atlantic and the waters off the coasts of French departments of Guyana, Martinique, Guadalupe and Reunion that come under the sovereignty or jurisdiction of France only, as technical measures for the Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean are established in Council Regulation (EC) No 2187/2005 of 21 December 2005 concerning the conservation of fishery resources through technical measures in the Baltic Sea, the Belts and the Sound, amending Regulation (EC) No 1434/98 and repealing Regulation (EC) No 88/98[20] and in Council Regulation (EC) No 1967/2006 of 21 December 2006 concerning management measures for the sustainable exploitation of fishery resources in the Mediterranean Sea, amending Regulation (EEC) No 2847/93 and repealing Regulation (EC) No 1626/94[21], respectively.
