I would remind the House that Greece consented to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia being granted candidate status for accession to the European Union in document COM(2007)0663, with an express commitment to negotiating a mutually acceptable solution on the question of the name under the aegis of the UN which would contribute to regional cooperation and good neighbourly relations, because without a solution, there can be no friendship and without friendship, there can be no alliances or partnerships.
Je voudrais rappeler à l’Assemblée que la Grèce a permis à l’ancienne République yougoslave de Macédoine de se voir accorder le statut de pays candidat à l’adhésion à l’Union européenne dans le document COM(2007)0663, en s’engageant expressément à négocier, sous l’égide des Nations unies, une solution mutuellement acceptable à la question du nom tout en contribuant à la coopération régionale et aux bonnes relations de voisinage, car sans solution, il ne peut y avoir d’amitié et sans amitié, il ne peut y avoir d’alliances ni de partenariats.
