On the background of reports on increased radiation levels inside the sarcophagus covering Reactor Four at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Commissioner BJERREGAARD and Commissioner van den BROEK today issued the following statement: "Even if the cause for the recurring incidents of significantly increased levels of radiation inside the old sarcophagus for the moment is not fully established, the incidents clearly demonstrate the need to bring the potential risks related to the sarcophagus under a satisfactory control as soon as possible.
